Description

This book has rock-solid world-building, very compelling characters, and a wonderfully addicting storyline filled with action and violence. But Moreno-Garcia puts a fresh spin on this backdrop by creating a world where human gangs and vampire gangs of different species are bitter rivals in the fight to control the drugs—and thus the wealth and the power—that flow through Mexico. As Moreno-Garcia elaborates on in the afterword and glossary at the back of the book, the vampire mythos is truly a global one, with cultures and societies all over the world having their own takes on the same predatory blood-sucker. Once Domingo realizes how much Atl needs help, the two work together to find a way to get out of town and escape her pursuers, a sadistic vampire named Nick and Rodrigo, the companion who’s trying to keep Nick under control.

Warning: I don't know why people on Goodreads insist on classifying this as YA, but it's an adult novel. One of my favorite books by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, and one of my all-time favorite horror books…Certain Dark Things will make you think about vampires in a whole new way. One of these, a beautiful young woman named Atl, flees to Mexico City when her Northern Mexico clan is destroyed by a rival gang of Necros (a horrifying European species that can control humans with a single bite and whose blood is poison to other vampires). A total side note but reading this book gave me a lot of the vibes I got when I first read one of my favourite books, Lost Souls by Poppy Z. Certain Dark Things is an homage to noir fiction, a genre of literature that takes its name from the film style and tends to feature dark and gritty depictions of crime, corruption, and violence.Yes, I’m back reviewing ANOTHER Moreno-Garcia book and I’m sure you will all be shocked when I say I loved it. As Domingo loves to read comic books about vampires, he becomes obsessedw ith Atl, the first real one he’s met, and wants to become her servant/errand boy/lover/friend. This excellent book is a must-have purchase for all libraries, especially where horror and urban fantasy fiction is hot. balanced on a knife-edge between hope and horror * The Guardian * Silvia Moreno-Garcia is a chameleon of an author . But by the end, I don't know if the author just got into a groove and became more assured throughout the book, or I just got used to the writing, or my first impression was wrong, because I did not end up feeling that way.

Gangs, drugs and corruption run rampant in the capital, but what you won’t have to worry about are vampires. Not only do these two provide some much-needed fleshing out of the world, but it was almost refreshing to follow a character who doesen’t revere vampires but rather fears them. It was a bit harder to work the streets than it was to work a big landfill or ride the rumbling garbage trucks, sorting garbage as people stepped outside their houses and handed the collectors their plastic bags.A lush and haunting supernatural noir, Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s Certain Dark Things is visceral, beautiful, and teeming with originality and complexities.

Atl needs to escape the city quickly, to get far away from the rival narco-vampire clan relentlessly pursuing her.All solid so far…which makes it all the more disappointing when the book unravels in its final stretch. Certain Dark Things takes place entirely in Mexico City, and Moreno-Garcia does such a good job of making it into an evocative setting it makes me wonder why I haven’t read more books set there. As usual her world building is sublime and her use of Mexico City as almost a character of it’s own, the descriptive writing she uses to bring it to life, make for a unique read. There was a striking quality about her, but her beauty was rather cutting compared to the faces of the models he’d viewed in the ads. This noir-style story takes place in an alternate version of Mexico City, where vampires are real and everyone knows it.
