As the true nature of her quest is revealed, Frankie begins to question her priorities: perhaps there is room in her life for a little magic, after all. Answering all the important questions you never knew you had, like where fairytale characters go to the toilet, this book offers plenty of laugh-out-loud moments. Frankie used to think it was cool too, until she started secondary school and it somehow became not cool any more. Our list includes some of the world’s favourite authors, illustrators and licensed brands, such as Eric Carle, Helen Oxenbury, Nadia Shireen, The Snowman, Doctor Who, Roald Dahl, Tom Fletcher, Jeff Kinney, Rick Riordan, Robin Stevens, and Jacqueline Wilson to name but a few.

Frankie Best Hates Quests is a love letter to the great sci-fi/fantasy epic novels, especially Tolkien. That's where he met Greg James, and in between messing about on the airwaves the pair created the bestselling Kid Normal series. With brilliant place names like Splendidness, Calmwater Bay and Fishsmelling-on-Sea, I hope there will be more adventures in Parallelia to come!

Whilst trying to find a mobile phone signal, Frankie finds her way into the attic and stumbles across some old maps and books. Instead, they have to stay with their grandad and Frankie is dreading it as they don’t know him very well. Joel – Frankie’s annoying nerd brother who spends all his time playing computer games like Elf-Quest and just generally being really super annoying. It is an effective device that adds humour and occasional respite from a thrilling pace but, at times, it feels unnecessary and somewhat undermines the story – which is genuinely tense and dramatic.

I found myself smiling all the way through the book and I absolutely adored the subtle Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit nods throughout, specially the “second breakfast “. One of my grandsons, 9 years old and slightly dyslexic, was in need of something to capture his imagination which would help with his reading.
