Starting with a fresh tag next to my Galaxy Note 20 Ultra phone, I scrolled to the Find part of the SmartThings app. It's possible to set up the SmartTag+ to locate your phone or activate things in your smart home with a short or long press, too. Although, in our tests, the Samsung Galaxy SmartTag Plus didn't quite meet the estimates from Samsung of 390 feet (120 meters). On recent Samsung flagships like the Galaxy Z Fold 2, Note 20 Ultra, S21 Plus, and S21 Ultra, it's possible to use these ultra-high frequencies to track down the tag when you're in its vicinity. In more remote locales, your mileage may vary — for example, if there are no Samsung phones in the area, or the tag was only briefly pinged by a passing Galaxy device.

Later, while out, it did find one nearby, though it was not surreptitiously left in my car to track me. Chiefly they’re only compatible with Samsung devices – so if you have a different Android smartphone or one of the best iPhones you’ll be out of luck. The Samsung Galaxy SmartTag Plus is all about precision, it goes above and beyond to help you locate your valuables. During my week of testing the Tag+, I only experienced a couple of examples of the reported location being notably far from where the tag actually was: Firstly, when it was placed high up near a window overlooking smaller buildings — in this instance, Samsung thought the tag was in the middle of a nearby road. Having graduated from Swansea University with a degree in Media and Communication Studies, and later with a diploma from Staffordshire University with a post graduate diploma in Computer Games Design, she's written for a huge number of publications, including T3, FitandWell, Top Ten Reviews, Eurogamer, NME and many more.

Still, the SmartTag Plus easily fits into a pocket along with a set of keys, but it’s likely too thick for stashing in a wallet. IoT devices need to be registered within the SmartThings app for a feature to function, and it's only available with Galaxy devices.

If you want to easily find your misplaced items and you have a Samsung Galaxy phone, it makes sense to go with the Samsung Galaxy SmartTag Plus.

Made of polycarbonate plastic, the SmartTag Plus’s case has a textured surface, but lacks the flash of the AirTag’s mirror-like finish. All other brands, products and services, and their respective trademarks, names and logos, are the property of their respective owners.

If you are near enough to hear the ring, then I don’t think it helps you any more than the sound alert already did, but if you get really stuck in a rut then it’s bound to be useful. In addition, it may not work if your device is mounted or pointing in the opposite direction of the SmartTag+. This saves the major panic in the morning when late for work, as you don't have to start looking everywhere and can instead just open the app and find them instantly.
