Description

It manages to tie up all the loose ends, meaningfully place a thematic poignancy on the characters’ actions, and remain tense and exciting through to the end.

Slam Bradley has been one step behind the kidnappers the entire time… can he turn the tables in time to save the infant heiress to the Wayne fortune? It’s a problem with modern comic publishing where everything is a 6+ issue arc that can’t be fairly judged until the story is over. Two generations before Batman, private investigator Slam Bradley gets tangled in the kidnapping of the century as the infant Wayne heir disappears in the night and so begins a brutal, hard-boiled, epic tale of a man living on the edge and a city about to burn. Since Constance Wayne and Slam Bradley banged, he could in fact be baby Thomas Wayne's true father and Batman's grandfather, making the caped crusader 1/8th black. In the six-part series Gotham City: Year One, Constance approaches Sam at his office, insisting that "a mother knows" when her child is dead, and she did.

São todos ingredientes que um belo romance noir pede, além de uma polícia não confiável e algumas pitadas de femmes fatales agindo dentro da trama. Plenty of people talk about revitalizing of “slums” and improving the city, but the people who live in those neighborhoods are an afterthought at best and something to be dealt with at worst. It’s also (indirectly) a Batman story, and the way it relates its Gotham with the one we know doesn’t work.

Private Eye Slam Bradley is thrown into the middle of the case and will do everything in his power to rescue this baby girl. They present a noble and dignified exterior to the public, Slam quickly learns that it’s all a façade. DISCLAIMER: DC Comics provided Batman News with a copy of this comic for the purposes of this review. In addition to the motif of decay under a veneer of prosperity, something that the comic is obviously going to focus on is race. This story has far more in common with a Billy Wilder movie than say Chinatown, but it works very well. The writing here is fantastic and a must-read for fans of classic mystery and gritty noir as King once again knocks it out of the park! He's bitter that his wife controls Wayne Enterprises' finances and is in a better financial position than himself.

It was the kind of assignment that would send plenty of reviewers scrambling to give their two cents before they could even muster up a penny. The finale of a grand mystery is here this week in Gotham City: Year One, which promises answers to the murder mystery that rocked the Wayne family. That said, the evil this story has uncovered and where it is buried has implications in a symbolic way surrounding Gotham. Don't worry though, because if that bothers you like it bothered me, it'll go away by 3rd issue at the most.and so begins a brutal, hard-boiled, epic tale of a man living on the edge and a city about to burn.
