My husband swoops in and picks him up, talking to him in a low voice, repeating his name between his sobs. Then release the air all at once, permitting your chest to collapse like a block tower knocked to the ground. It is not normal that a girl teaches her boy, but I am only showing him what I want, what plays on the insides of my eyelids as I fall asleep.

Here, readers might feel the need to reexamine any and all assumptions of how women navigate the dangerous realities of patriarchy. She tracks it down and attacks it, knocking it to the ground and kicking it until it curls into a ball. I feel like this one was one of the weaker ones, just because I didn't feel pushed to mull it over as much as the others. In Machado’s collection, unnamed narrators inhabit the burdens that can sometimes be associated with mother, sister, wife, and daughter. In this collection, Machado artfully explores themes of sexuality, feminism, and the power dynamics that shape our lives.

After the ice cream puddles in the bowl, I tell my parents that I am going to walk with him down the lane. These women find themselves woven into the fabric of the everyday from literally being woven into clothing to committing protests by inserting themselves into ATMs and electrical systems. We encounter a spooky old hotel, terrible weather, buried memories about the nascent sexuality of pubescent girls, tears “the temperature of blood” and some truly disgusting psychosomatic pustules. The doctor peers down between my legs, his white eyebrows making unreadable Morse code across his forehead.
