It is a rambling collection of things that sound meaningful by the nature of the topics mentioned and the heaviness of the big words being used all the time, but that carries little actual substance. I tried multiple times to give people a general idea of what this book is about, and I failed every time.

The truth-speaker Kae Tempest takes to non-fiction with grace, musicality and innate essayistic skill. Creativity holds the key: the ability to provide us with internal and external connection, to move us beyond consumption, to allow us to discover authenticity and closeness to all others, to deliver us an antidote for our numbness. Tempest talks a lot about empathy and how we need to see and acknowledge the stories behind every person we meet.

Because my natural default setting is the certainty that situations like this are really all about me.In this urgent and incisive pamphlet, Kae Tempest leads the reckoning against this system, placing our legacy in our own hands. Throughout, there are familiar shades of mysticism and mindfulness, of anti-capitalist theorising and the hippies’ tune-in, drop-out arguments. Kae Tempest has added one more string to an already crowded bow: On Connection is the first nonfiction work by this Mercury prize-winning musician, Ted Hughes award-winning poet, acclaimed playwright, novelist, and chief creative chronicler of the last decade.

Creative connection is anything that brings us closer to ourselves and fellow human beings, and it has the potential to offer insights into mental health, politics and beyond. Each chapter is prefaced by William Blake quotations, and it’s no wonder his writing appeals to Tempest: both artists’ work is concerned with tapping into something ancient and mythic. Then there were sudden interminglings of sections like this with out-of-the-blue reflections about the author's own privilege in regards to racism, which in how superficial and even perfunctory they felt made for an at times painful read.

Kae raises some amazing points, there are some great moment of motivation, and there was nothing in the book I disagreed with.
