Singer Fish plays the role of misunderstood poet to perfection, his bedsit anguish memorably realised by sleeve artist Mark Wilkinson. He Knows You Know" gained some airplay in the United States and reached number 21 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart.

The quality of MP3 download just isn't up to scrutiny once you play this piece on a decent audio system, so the re-mastered CD looked the way to go. In the United States, however, it failed to make any impact, peaking at number 175 on the Billboard 200 chart. The lyrics from Fish are more playful on tracks like "Garden Party" than on later albums, and his extremly wordy anecdotes telling the story of "The Web" are the most florid and grandiose Marillion ever got! I have to admit I did not follow the band after Fish left because for me, Marillion became a more commercial Indy band, but I do respect they have still gone on to have an admirable career but this record for me will always have a corner of my musical heart, as I explored the music as I matured. Um ehrlich zu sein: Mir hat auch die Klangqualität der ersten Pressung gut gefallen, aber jetzt klingt alles noch etwas brillanter und differenzierter.

Elsewhere, loss of another kind is explored in "Chelsea Monday"; Fish commendably vents his spleen at the establishment in "Forgotten Sons"--a crowd-stopping finale to Marillion's live show in those days--and pokes wordy fun at the toffs in the band's first and most unlikely hit, "Garden Party".

Beautifully crafted debut album from one of the leading lights of the (relatively) short-lived progressive rock revival of the 1980s. The recording sessions for the album started in December 1982 at The Marquee Studios in London and finished in February 1983, with Tauber producing and Simon Hanhart engineering. Ich habe die Originalpressung seit unzähligen Jahren in meiner CD-Sammlung stehen und habe mir nun auch den 2020-Stereo-Remix dazu gegönnt. In the title track a convoluted web of lyrical imagery invests its prosaic lost-my-girlfriend theme with a tortured passion previously alien to prog rock. The drummer puts in a good performance, just markedly different to later albums which helps define this early, fragile sound. It was the penultimate release of Fish era Marillion albums in a recent deluxe reissue campaign that also includes Misplaced Childhood, Clutching at Straws, Brave, and Afraid of Sunlight. Allerdings muss man sagen, dass man "Script for a jester's tear" nicht einfach "nebenbei" hören kann.

However, in the 1997 remastered edition, four out of six songs are additionally credited to bass player Diz Minnit and keyboard player Brian Jelliman, who were both the initial members of the group. I love this album as a whole: superb music, detailed lyrics and fantastic cover Artwork create a unified vision that Marillion had spent the proceeding few years creating. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.

Script for a Jester's Tear is the only studio album by Marillion to feature the band's original drummer and founding member Mick Pointer, who was dismissed following the album's UK tour. If you can get hold of "Recital of the Script" on DVD, a live recording, you can see this world writ large: energetic yet poetic music from an astounding band.
