This no age statement bottling of Nikka Miyagikyo single malt whisky contains whiskies of at least 10 years old. Using less peaty malt, this whisky is distilled in a pot still heated by indirect steam at a low temperature. With expansion over the years a second distillery (the Miyagikyo Distillery) was added near the city of Sendai in the north of Honshu. Nikka’s founder Masataka Taketsuru chose this site in the mountains of Sendai to contrast with his first distillery, Yoichi, which located in the coastal area.

Asahi Breweries acquired Nikka in 2001 since when Japanese whiskies, as a whole, have seen a huge rise in popularity across the world and has led to significant further expansion of the their production facilties to cope with demand. Please always read the labels, warnings, and directions provided with the product before using or consuming a product. Information and statements about products are not intended to be used to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease or health condition. This contrasts with their first distillery of Yoichi in Hokkaido which is situated on the coast and displays a much peatier character. Replacing the previous NAS Miyagikyo single malt as well as the remaining age statement expressions, this single release will represent the distillery going forward as demand for Japanese whisky remains as strong as ever.

It lingers on notes of tobacco, spices (cardamom, ginger), toasted nuts and stewed fruits (apple, damson). There’s some darker, more complex notes too, in the form of chocolate, along with candied fruit and some honey.

FRUITY AND ELEGANT JAPANESE SINGLE MALT WHISKY – Nikka Miyagikyo Single Malt is a complex, fruity and soft single malt whisky made at the Miyagikyo distillery near Sendai on Japan’s main island of Honshu. Masataka Taketsuru, founder of Nikka and founding father of Japanese whisky learned his trade at Hazelburn Distillery in Campbelltown. At the foundation in 1934, apple products helped Nikka to keep the business sustainable while the first whiskies were maturing, just like Rita supported Masataka’s dream. He aimed to make a complete contrast between the two distilleries, Miyagikyo and Yoichi, with different natural environments and production methods. After his marriage to a Scottish lass, Rita Cowan, the couple moved back to his home country after which he decided to bring whisky distilling to Japan.Masataka Taketsuru intentionally positioned these distilleries side by side, purposefully aligning them with distinct natural environments and production methods.

The Miyagikyo distillery was built in 1969, in the heart of this natural environment, from which the whiskies draw their softness, elegance, and purity. They are distilled in copper pot stills and matured in a variety of cask types - including ex-bourbon, ex-sherry and even mizunara. The whisky gets its distinct aroma and body from direct heating distillation, in which the pot stills are heated with finely powdered natural coal--the traditional method that is hardly ever used today, even in Scotland. The single malt Miyagikyo bottling represents the perfect expression of the distillery's delicate character, with an emphasis on ex-sherry casks for maturation to bring added depth to this whisky's natural charm. This blend has an ABV of 45% and is a rather less peaty malt, with an exquisite fruity profile and a certain sherry cask influence. Nikka's founder Masataka Taketsuru chose a valley in the Miyagi prefecture as the site for his second distillery, and started its operation in 1969.
