William Butler-Adams in telling the transitional move from a niche folding bicycle maker creating a few thousand cycles a year to a British icon which today will soon make 100,000 cycles a year and maybe half a million cycles a year once the US operations get going is a gripping read. Henshaw makes some interesting observations in the latest edition, which ends in a rather less cheery place than the earlier ones.

Travels with a Brompton is a sparkling narrative about the adventures of an English couple and their folding bicycles over nearly 30 years of exploring France . Railway author David Henshaw tells the story of the locomotive, the people who worked the beds and the railway that refused to die . In this book, you will read the story of what and how we got to where we are today, and how we’re encouraging so many people to adopt the Brompton way of life. While this new publication will still be of interest to Brompton riders, they won't be the main audience.A few pages of colour are supplemented with numerous black and white ones, and I suspect that many of the latter could have been in colour – larger would have been good, too, because it's often hard to make out any detail.

Anyone interested in managing enterprises should read this as it has some perceptive insights into the real issues of managing people to achieve a goal. Since our earliest beginnings, every documented society has gathered to perform elaborate rites and ceremonies - from mass worship to body modification - yet ritual poses a deep paradox: why do we give the utmost importance to otherwise pointless activities? Designers – the Brompton is more than a bike and was used as a British icon in the London 2012 Olympic ceremony in Beijing. A look at the last 40 years of Brompton design, a summary of how it has stood the test of time but every financial crash since 1976, Brexit, and COVID-19, not to mention every other risk that any business faces.

Even if you don't agree with the direction that the business is taking or the decisions being made, you can't argue with the logical thought and simple explanations.

If you’ve heard it’s unreliable, it certainly can be, but it’s unreliable in the way a fine racehorse can be unreliable. Engineering is integral to Butler-Adams’ outlook, and through this prism he wants readers to understand that components of a business cannot be seen in isolation but as part of a whole. We already know of plans for a new factory to run alongside (and eventually replace) the current one, but before that there is increasing electrical assistance, and an expansion of bike docks. It's not the first book about the iconic machine – that will be Brompton Bicycle by David Henshaw, first published in 2009, but updated with a third edition in 2020. TheDeorhord by Hana Videen is a fascinating collection of medieval creatures large and small, and a delightful dive into Old English. Our need for ritual is primordial, and embracing its logic can help us connect, find meaning and discover who we are. This radical essay explores patriarchy and capitalism’s impact on beauty ideals, and inspires us to embrace our own disobedient bodies. This earlier work is very much aimed at Brompton riders who also want to know about the product development of their machine.
