I could have got by with a smaller stove and some heatproof insulation over the oven, or even a sheet of aluminium foil, but I didn't want to alter the thermal properties of the oven. I have never gone camping, but if I had known that “Camping is all about delicious food,” as you said to Wednesday Elf, I might even have been persuaded to brave the biting insects (to whom I am like chocolate cake, lol)! But after reading all about them on various forums it does seem a given that they can be a bit tricky to consistently obtain something edible. Adding a Cordite/pizza stone in the bottom as a diffuser and another User suggested throwing a fiberglass welding blanket over it to minimize the wind effect on the temperature swings. Since I'm a sucker for a good breakfast casserole and they are so easy to throw together, I decided that would be the first dish I would try out in the camp oven.

The main design difference between the Coleman oven and the natural gas oven in my home is insulation. Luckily the rack slots provide a good place to pass a couple of pieces of fencing wire or similar through to make another support with just. The flame is either to much to one side and will not heat the oven properly or, if you position the hole of the oven directly over the flame the oven almost falls of.

So if you are backpacking, bikepacking or riding on a motorcycle, you probably don’t want to have this beast with you. The pie came out of the oven perfect, but turned out to be inedible because the coal refuse soil had made the rhubarb taste intolerably of coal oil.

It might be a tricky balance of replacing coals to get it to hold at a good temperature, but it's certainly worth a try. It was nice to have something other than pop tarts or cereal for breakfast and something other than s'mores for dessert. Camping in high altitudes and little wood around for us makes the choice for a pressure cooker more obvious. I would recommend keeping a pot holder handy for when you need to open the oven to check on your food. Since this is something we bake at home semi-regularly, we figured it would make for a good comparison in there field.You'll notice in the pork pics that I used my second choice brick pieces on top of the oven to help retain some heat in the top as the breeze would slow things down quickly, now if roasting in the wild I wrap the oven in foil to limit some heat loss out of the seams, rack slots and its uninsulated construction, allows for more consistent overall temp with lower burner setting.
