I could have got by with a smaller stove and some heatproof insulation over the oven, or even a sheet of aluminium foil, but I didn't want to alter the thermal properties of the oven. I have never gone camping, but if I had known that “Camping is all about delicious food,” as you said to Wednesday Elf, I might even have been persuaded to brave the biting insects (to whom I am like chocolate cake, lol)! But after reading all about them on various forums it does seem a given that they can be a bit tricky to consistently obtain something edible. Adding a Cordite/pizza stone in the bottom as a diffuser and another User suggested throwing a fiberglass welding blanket over it to minimize the wind effect on the temperature swings. Since I'm a sucker for a good breakfast casserole and they are so easy to throw together, I decided that would be the first dish I would try out in the camp oven.

The main design difference between the Coleman oven and the natural gas oven in my home is insulation. Luckily the rack slots provide a good place to pass a couple of pieces of fencing wire or similar through to make another support with just. The flame is either to much to one side and will not heat the oven properly or, if you position the hole of the oven directly over the flame the oven almost falls of.

It might be a tricky balance of replacing coals to get it to hold at a good temperature, but it's certainly worth a try. It was nice to have something other than pop tarts or cereal for breakfast and something other than s'mores for dessert. Since this is something we bake at home semi-regularly, we figured it would make for a good comparison in there field. You'll notice in the pork pics that I used my second choice brick pieces on top of the oven to help retain some heat in the top as the breeze would slow things down quickly, now if roasting in the wild I wrap the oven in foil to limit some heat loss out of the seams, rack slots and its uninsulated construction, allows for more consistent overall temp with lower burner setting.

Pour the yeasty fluid inside the crater of the ‘volcano’ and slowly stir with one finger trying to leave the salt untouched for as long as possible.Inside there’s a rack which adjusts to three heights for different recipes and there’s an easy to read thermometer for temperature monitoring. Getting back to the oven itself, let's take a look at a few of the great features, along with more baking tips. I scrambled up some eggs and threw in some pre-cooked bacon, shredded potatoes, shredded cheese, onion and salt and pepper.

I get perfect muffins and cinnamon rolls when I bake them 100 degrees below the temperature I would use in a regular home oven (250 degrees instead of 350 degrees).that you would like to see reviewed here, simply submit it for consideration on the contact form below. As others have said, preheat and use just enough heat to get cooking, easy to gradually increase the heat if needed rather than trying to recover a too quickly burnt offering. Christa had been a chef at her own restaurant in Switzerland for years and has always baked her bread, including while on the road. That said, the most important thing I have learned about baking temperatures with my Coleman oven is to bake things at a lower temp than what is recommended on the recipe or package.
