Description

I think this book is an amazing adventures book and is a book with reflections of real life stories. Accompanied by her trusty companion, Skye, a three-legged husky, the dog she's always wanted, Laura's adventures begin. But I had to say the ending was not satisfying as it skipped lots of the climax action and just jumped to the uncle's POV of the story. I also was troubled by the descriptions of the Mukhtars as stereotypes, and why was Atari’s constantly referred to as the Asian boy?

It’s all quite sudden, and the criminals don’t fall into the Romantic or cosy crime categories - it’s a bit grim and deals with modern issues. Iove the description in it even though it has hardly any pictures I can still get a perfect clear picture in my mind using the description. Middle grade mysteries are among my favourite books to read because they're so much fun and Dead Man's Cove certainly isn't short of mysteries to figure out. One of the best things about Dead Man’s Cove is it manages to do everything I’ve mentioned above, keeping the prose simple enough for an 8 year old, yet without being condescending. But while her uncle is kind and gives her plenty of things she's never had in her life (including a doggo friend), he's not so generous with his time, always busy with some vague assignments and working at strange hours. Laura's an orphan who has spent most o her life in a children's home, dreaming of long-lost relatives coming to find her. She is the author of the multi-award- winning The White Giraffe series for children, as well as the Laura Marlin mysteries, the first of which, Dead Man’s Cove, won the 2011 Blue Peter Book of the Year Award. When Laura finds a message in a bottle, she embarks on a deadly quest, one that will test her detective skills to the limit and set her on a collision course with a gang of criminal masterminds who will stop at nothing to get their own way. Because she kept reminding us, the reader, HOW MUCH SHE loved the freedom and how the other families didn't trust her that much.

An orphaned girl with a big love for detectives finds herself thrown into mystery when she moves in to live with her uncle. If you live in or are from Cornwall, you may be looking for books set on homegrown turf to share with your child. Yet whilst her experiences in care does affect her confidence in making strong links with people, she isn’t jaded nor disenfranchised. Unlike the clear structure, story arc seeding and strong pauses for reflection in say the Taylor Rose mysteries that I have done before, Lauren St John’s Laura Marlin mysteries take some more meandering approach to the plot, a meditative walk, spiralling into the problem approach which means that my casebook could not be structured in the same way that I have done so before which was actually an exciting proposition. She’s independent, intelligent, brave and loyal, but she has her flaws too, making her rounded and believable. If you are on your way up to the Cape Disappointment lighthouse, then if you have the time to take the side trail to this cove then you really should.
