One minute the PE teacher, Mr Canton, is giving out chores for the morning and the next he’s dragged underground by some unseen horror, leaving only his cap behind. Naira, is the hard-working princess of the group who is under pressure from her mother to do well and excel in life.

When four classmates are given detention on a Saturday morning, they thought their day couldn’t get any worse. Each of our protagonists was brilliantly developed and we saw each of them grow both as individuals and as a team too. I’m so glad I got to read this book because I had a great time and it let me discover this great author, who I’ll definitely be reading more of.The plot moves quickly enough, and the book kept me interested enough that I didn’t stop to think of it during the story, only once I’d finished it. Check out Jennifer Killick’s assembly video where she shares children’s books she’s enjoyed, where she loves to read, her top tips for enjoying reading and more! Panic then sets in when the detention supervisor is dragged underground by something… you may be able to guess what from the clues but who and why is Angelo being targeted? The characters are all flawed, but with well examined reasons and the book teaches us about friendship and forgiveness. I didn’t expect a lot of the plots and the revelations were well done and definitely surprised me as I would have never expected the direction it went.

It all starts going wrong when there’s a scream in the school grounds and soon after their teacher disappears. They always feel completely believeable and genuine from the way that they speak and act, to their references and the way they interact with each other. I liked the characters, and I really enjoyed the Jurassic World references as a way for the kids to process what was going on around them.

C again, but something sucks him straight into the ground and he's gone, clawing and scraping at the grass that is sucking him under. They are chucked into this wild race-against-time plot where everything goes wrong and the impossible happens, and that brings them closer. Another of my favourite character's was the teacher Mr Canton who was supposed to be supervising the group during the detention, his attempts to be 'down with the kids' were both cringeworthy and hilarious. You’ll be happy to hear they did not succumb to the age-old horror trope of “one leaves, dies, the others follow and then die as well” while the person watching or reading is screaming at them to stop and turn back.
