Description

It had been a Bank of England apprehension, a painful impotence, a Come-you-here arrest by all-powerful police. There must be worse ways to sit out a pandemic than to film a Goshawk nest in the canopy of a temporarily depopulated tourist honeypot.

Which surprised me a little, but I should have realized that the author of The Once and Future King (the source for Camelot and an inspiration for Harry Potter) would have pretty strong chops. The journey takes him from an encounter with a stuffed Goshawk in a glass case, through travels into supposed Goshawk territories in Britain, to Berlin - where he finds the bird at ease in the city. far from the bitter, sexual confusion of the metropolis or the small wars of the schoolroom” (Macdonald). You crushed that correspondent by some excellent replies in which you cruelly referred to him as ‘he or she’ and he or she made exit crawling backwards mumbling. H. White’s memoir describes with searing honesty his attempt to train a wild goshawk, a notoriously difficult bird to master.Parlargli cortesemente ricorrendo al miagolio che nei miei tentativi di conversazione era la cosa che sembrava gradire di più, sorridere allo spazio ignorando la sua presenza, rassicurarlo con calma. Pigeons, on the other hand, are peace-loving birds, good parents and citizens, and "the most susceptible to the principles of the League of Nations". A firm, square copy, a little rubbed to extremities with very small white blemishes to spine and edges, but very good in the jacket with the slightest of toning to spine, ends a little creased, but bright. A handsome copy of this ultimately tragic autobiographical account of the author's attempts to train a hawk. He doesn't want to tell a story that's untrue to reality, but ultimately he refuses to tell a hopeless story.

It must have been like death-- the thing which we can never know beforehand--as, with clumsy talons groping for an unnatural foothold, his fledgeling consciousness was hunched and bundled in the oblong, alien surroundingness. I started it AGES ago but only finished it recently coz I had like 10 pages left and I was like okay, let's just finish this. Red cloth hard cover with silver titles on spine, and no cover wear apart from very small patch of loss of colour on lower front board. The word 'feral' has a kind of magical potency which allied itself to two other words, 'ferocious' and 'free. It is a book about failure, but I have a hard time now to explain what it is exactly that makes this such a good book, through and through English, and I like it more than H is for Hawk itself.

A certain amount of failure seems inevitable, and there's cruelty in the sport of falconry that contrasts with White's deep love and respect for his hawk. Il libro è la cronaca di quell’impresa temeraria: non un manuale, ma il racconto di un’esperienza profonda e lacerante, il tentativo di sottomettere all'uomo un assassino dai folli occhi di un forsennato arciduca bavarese.

It is as much a story of the struggle between the bird and the author as it is about the author itself. They are very smart but he was trained through calm, gentle patience, but in three days was sitting on my arm. There was a section near the middle of the book that was almost too sad for me to handle, and I had to quit reading it for a couple of weeks. Instead, photography is presented almost exclusively as another way of seeing – a more attentive, intense, undeviating form of observing wild things, with the film (there must be days of it) barely more than a by-product. I have a wild caught cockatoo that I have had for over 30 years (before it was illegal in NYS to have one) and training him was quite easy in comparison.Yet something I read on the back cover or introduction gave me pause and I made the purchase, and am glad I did. penso che se non si ha un'anima da scout (per chi ha la mia età direi un'anima da giovani marmotte) queste parti possano risultare abbastanza pesanti.
