I had often taken drugs socially but now drugs had become a way to cope, to numb myself from being unhappy and unsupported. There is a moving section where she discovers drag and the power it gives her to become her true self. I think if they actually sat down with me and communicated in a respectful way instead of posting things about our community that are detrimental to the mental health, physical wellbeing and emotional wellbeing of trans people, they would see that trans people want what’s best for cisgender women, too.Until we have a government that recognises the humanity of transgender individuals and that is willing to understand our needs and lived experiences, we will continue to face societal ostracism; we will continue to struggle; we will continue to die. This version of Bergdorf offers a glimpse into the human cost of being a Black trans activist in the unrelenting public sphere . The book will also take in current discussions around gender and sexuality, “because even though it looks like we’re living in a progressive society, how progressive is it when we’re still fighting against conversion therapy, and Boris Johnson is trying to wind back trans rights?

I feel like this book is informative and concepts like intersectionality and transgender experience are well written, but the book lacked something I'm not sure I can put my finger on. A Serving of Crime with a Difference - You May Just Discover Something Unique, Different, or Unusual in These 20 Crime Novels. One of my favorite passages in the book is “The existence of LGBTQ+ Pride is a defiance of heteronormative society’s efforts to shame us as a community, because of our sexual identities and desires. By the time she left home and moved to Brighton for university, there were other transitions to navigate.More than a decade later, after establishing a successful career in the public eye, Bergdorf believes that transitioning is an ingrained part of the human experience, not a process that only trans people go through.

She has spoken on international panels from Oxford to Princeton University and contributed to publications including the Guardian, Evening Standard, Grazia, i-D, British Vogue, Elle, Teen Vogue and Paper Magazine.Munroe has fronted campaigns for beauty, fashion and lifestyle brands Illamasqua, Uniqlo, Mulberry and Calvin Klein. The podcast will see Munroe and her guests explore their journeys of growth and share stories of turning trauma into triumph, adversity into opportunity and much more. As a model and an outspoken activist, who was hired and fired by L’Oréal in the space of a week in 2017 over comments she made in response to violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, Bergdorf said she felt that, until now, “my intelligence has been undermined, and I’ve been underestimated a lot in a lot of different instances”.

She was Black, of mixed heritage, in a town where the only other Black people she saw were two girls who had been adopted by white parents; she was an effeminate boy, repeatedly ostracised and bullied for being different, not only by her peers, but by her peers’ parents, too. If I had had the opportunity to transition within a society that prioritised supporting trans folk, that cared about our safety, our health, our inclusion or employment, then it would have been a very different experience indeed. I had thought it was a memoir but I'd say that as it is, the text was probably more suited for say a blog form OR it should have been made clearer. An interesting, emotional account of a Black trans woman and the traumas she went through growing up.

This is a book to help bring us closer to a shared a powerful guide to how our differences can be harnessed as a tool to heal, build community, and construct a better society. The book will explore the history of gender throughout the world, including Polynesian, Indian and Native American cultures that recognised more than two genders before the colonial era. It was an “incredible” feeling, she said, to have 11 publishers bidding to publish it, and she was “blown away” by Bloomsbury’s associate publisher Alexis Kirschbaum, who eventually acquired it in what the publisher said was likely to be the biggest book deal for a black, trans woman. Kirschbaum praised Bergdorf for having “a point of view that is exceptionally wise and humane, and the life experience to back it up”. We’re all on a journey, and a transition with regards to gender is just one of many we all experience as human beings.
