Having actually sat in Mister Tom’s cottage allowed them to make comparisons to their own lives and creature comforts! So I have this theory that whenever I read a book where there is a gruff old man who is prickly on the outside but a big softie in the middle, I will love it. I would recommend this book to children above the age of 9 as it is a good book but some parts are sad and parts of it could be quite disturbing for younger children. It's one of those books that grows up with you, that you come back to again and again even when you're an adult. This moving novel tackles some difficult themes of child abuse and neglect as well as giving readers a glimpse into wartime Britain.

I read so many children's books these days and now realise how high the benchmark for real literature can and should be for children.

Young William is an evacuee from the city streets of London who is deposited in the rural cottage of a crusty old widower.

The children could either design and make a torch to use in the air raid shelters, or they could make a siren to warn of an air-raid. And that uncertainty and hesitancy of never being on the receiving hand of a comforting touch or to see his own capability. A Little Love Song ( Not a Swan in the US), her third novel, features a young woman becoming independent and finding first love in wartime Britain.

The children are then ‘evacuated’ to the Museum’s traditional ‘Village Green’ where they find themselves billeted either with Mr Tom Oakley, or at school with Mrs Hartridge or visiting Mrs Brant (an inferred character from the story). Some people might say it’s good writing, that I could hear the character’s voice in my head, not just see it on the page, but those people have obviously never heard Zack, with the big, annoying, squeaky voice on him. The little group of friends he makes that bring him out of his own sheltered mold - that allow him to see him for what he can be - if just given the opportunity. She trained to be an actress, studying at the Rose Bruford College of Speech and Drama, and at Marcel Marceau's L'école Internationale de Mime in Paris. William attends school and makes friends, including George, twins Carrie and Ginnie, and especially fellow evacuee Zach.
