The variation in content goes further: there are even several pages of recipes and a short graphic story. The numerous short pieces that make up this book don’t so much resolve the mystery and tensions as highlight the sometimes baffling features of their collaborations. I'm now going to delve into their back catalogue to fully discover a band I really should have discovered years ago.

Alongside their narrative history, the book presents rare photos, original illustrations, a cookbook by chef Roy Choi, a graphic novel, a map of Beastie Boys' New York, mixtape playlists, pieces by guest contributors, and many more surprises.

Unlike their albums which, with the exception of some of the more puerile early recordings, tended to be forward-looking, the book casts its gaze backwards. Listening to them talk about New York City during the 80s and how the music scene was transitioning during that time was gold! This was so disappointing, juvenile humour, nothing of interest really said as everyone was nice to them. Reilly, Ian Rogers, Maya Rudolph, Rev Run, Luc Sante, Kate Schellenbach, MC Serch, Chloe Sevigny, Jon Stewart, Ben Stiller, Wanda Sykes, Jeff Tweedy and Philippe Zdar. I LOVED making mix tapes for my friends and it was such a treat to read about someone else's experience with the importance of it as well: choosing just the right songs, finding just the right cover to put inside the cassette, either cutting something out of a magazine, or drawing something myself.

Beastie Boys fans will devour this book, as will anyone interested in the early days of hip-hop, the art/music/street life of New York City in the 1980s, and the alternative-nation zeitgeist of the ’90s. I just wanted to know little tidbits about the recording process and how they feel about some of their records in retrospect. No, they not only wrote a book with all of it in there but they also narrated the book and apologized for it. I gotta tell you, though, I legit lost my shit when I heard Wanda Sykes' voice come through my speakers.
