The atmospheres and use of ambience were a huge source of inspiration and a big factor in the making of Door One. The thoughts he wanted to leave for his fans, friends, former band mates, his wife and society in general are somber and inner reflective.

Nicely crafted tracks but a couple do seem to be that they are missing the final touches to the album.

I don’t ever think that there can be an absolute truth in music, it’s the people that are involved in the process at that moment, making choices. It didn’t take me long to realise that David,’s voice was similar to Peter Gabriel’s but was certainly his own. It’s a great exposition of how the finest performances are a communion between performer and listener, with the singer as the focal point – and if you’ve been to a Big Big Train gig you’ll know exactly what David is talking about.

The opening has hints of David Crosby’s jazzy inflections and song structures as well as the harmonies. It’s a reflection on the quality experience of singing to an audience, no doubt drawn from David’s experience of doing just that: “I hit the stage as they strike up the band, the audience moves to the beat. Trusted co-producer/engineer Patrick Phillips oversaw the album’s completion after Longdon’s untimely death in November 2021. This is a very personal song and its lyrics reveal much about who David was, so it’s good that he found peace with Sarah, even though that was ended abruptly. And perhaps here it’s hardest to separate Door One – with all its heart, soul, love, vitriol, humour and wisdom – from its sad, posthumous circumstances. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.

David was a massively creative force of nature when it came to music, and I hope that he would have been happy with the choices that we made . Stacey is one of four main musicians featured, along with bassist Steve Vantsis, saxophonist Theo Travis and Longdon’s former band mate from Gift Horse, Gary Bronham who contributed many instruments to the album. Overall, listening to Door One reminds of how I felt when I listened to by first BBT opus - The Underfall Yard. When David died, the challenging task of doing the final recording and mixing the record fell to David’s co-producer, Patrick Phillips.Inevitably the record arrives in the shadow of that tragedy, but to view it solely in that context would do its creator a disservice.

Along with the John Barry orchestral trappings, this irresistible slice of art-pop has an earworm three-chord central hook, and another eye-watering vocal climax. The Letting Go” is just as good, though, with its 10+ minute runtime, hopeful aura, fantastic instrumentation, and grand ending. Door One, borrowing the nickname for a recreation ground in Nottingham near where David grew up, has a musical personality that is distinct from his work within Big Big Train even though Gregory Spawton plays acoustic guitar on two songs. Sangfroid follows and is another song about relationships and their transient nature, this track has great lyrics that are really heartfelt and poignant. When David Longdon died suddenly and unexpectedly from a fall last year, the world of music was deeply saddened.
