THE ALPINE SHIFT FITS THE NAME ALPINE WELL, TO THE POINT IT’S POSSIBLY NOT ATTRACTIVE TO OTHER USERS. THE HIGH THROAT ON THE HOOD COVERS THE FACE BETTER THAN ANY SHELL WE’VE SEEN BEFORE EVEN WITH A HELMET ON, INSTANTLY BEING A REAL FUNCTIONAL ADVANTAGE THAT IN THIS CASE IS HELPED BY THE OFFSET ZIP. THE GENERAL CUT IS NOT SUPER ATHLETIC, SO IT’S MADE TO GO OVER MIDLAYERS AND STILL BE STREAMLINED, THE SLEEVES COULD BE A BIT HIGHER VOLUME SO IT WOULD VENT BETTER. Perfect for fit and competent hill walkers, the Allalinhorn is an excellent introduction to alpine mountaineering. Hire a guide and you’ll be able to master the basics of roping up for glacier travel, navigating crevasses and using an ice axe and crampons. DIAMOND LITE PRO nylon outer with tough 'liquid crystal' technology, breathable waterproof membrane and DWR finish Endurance expeditions and athletes are critical in the development of our garment designs ensuring Montane clothing is fit for purpose. They are our reason to be critical within our design processes. From unsupported ventures to the North Pole, smash and grab route attempts on the North Face of the Eiger to high profile scientific work in the high Arctic. All of these athletes help Montane develop clothing that will withstand the harshest of conditions both physiologically and environmentally.

Used extensively by Cairngorm Treks throughout Autumn and Winter 2017/18 within the Cairngorm National Park, Skye, and surrounding areas Whilst it may seem ridiculous to list the ways in which I've used it, I'm going to, simply because it has varied depending on the conditions: As the highest mountain located solely in Italy, you might be surprised to find Gran Paradiso making this list of the easiest 4,000m peaks for beginners, but Gran Paradiso is a relatively non-technical climb often used as an acclimatisation for the nearby Mont Blanc. Speaking of which, the summit of Gran Paradiso provides excellent views of the highest peak in the Alps, with panoramic views of snow-smothered mountains and even a Madonna statue at the summit for photo ops. We do not offer to reimburse postage costs if an item doesn't fit / you don't like it / change of mind etc. We got together with mountaineering brand Montane, who manufacture technical kit that can really go the distance. With an extensive range of mountaineering and climbing gear for both men and women, you can be sure to find everything you need for your first foray into the mountaineering world. With that in mind, we put our heads together to come up with the four easiest 4,000m peaks for beginners, so you can decide which biggie to bag first. Breithorn, Switzerland (4,164m)Ideal for those looking to bag their second or third 4,000er, the Weissmies offers a little more challenge at the same altitude and with the same jaw dropping views. You’ll still get a helping hand from the Swiss lift system, whether you start your adventure in Saas-Almagell (where you can cut out the first few hundred metres with a chairlift) or Saas-Grund (where the Hohsaas cable car takes you to the base of the normal route). The Dragon Long Trail Tights are, like their 3/4 length counterparts, constructed using recycled Carvico/Econyl fabric. I've been really impressed with this material, not just because of how comfortable and stretchy it is, but also its durability. Even after a lot of miles, neither the 3/4 length tights (which I reviewed earlier in the year) nor the long trail tights (on review here) have shown even the slightest sign of wear. They've also managed to avoid the bobbling that some tights seem to suffer from, especially running where I tend to amongst the heather on the Peak District moors. The Allalinhorn is one of the easiest 4,000m peaks in the Alps for similar reasons to the Breithorn; it’s easily accessible by cable car and involves a short ascent over glaciated terrain. From the summit, you can feast your eyes on views over Monte Rosa, Matterhorn, Weisshorn and the Mont Blanc massif. When it comes to fit, they are - as you'd expect - quite a slender, active cut, although the elastane/stretch does mean that they'll conform to a wide variety of body types/shapes - even my thunder thighs. The sizing is accurate, with medium feeling very much like medium (in my case). Due to the elasticated waistband being nice, comfortable and snug I've never had to use the drawcords, although they are there for those that need them. Take the cable car from the popular swiss ski resort of Saas-Fee up to the top Mittelallalin station at 3,450m. From here you can follow the normal route to the summit – this is one of the most climbed routes in the Alps, so you should see plenty of other climbers en route to the top. For a longer adventure it is also possible to climb Allalinhorn from the valley in Saas-Fee, stopping at the Längfluh mountain hut overnight.

Unfortunately, the adjustable cuffs are just a bit too small to be able to pull over my technical climbing gloves, which is a bit of a design oversight for a mountain shell. However, it does mean that it is a tighter fit so once on, you know your gloves are secure. Faults deemed to have been caused by misuse or improper care (including washing not in accordance with the product wash care instructions) are not covered by the guarantee. Competent UK hill walkers will find this a great introduction to mountaineering, and hiring a guide is the best way to learn the basics of roping up as well as using an ice axe and crampons on alpine snow. Climb during the summer for the easiest conditions. The more experienced have a further summit to play with if conditions allow. Allalinhorn, Switzerland (4,027m) Photo: Th.Keilig
