Big pit: A reel with a long spool designed for extreme long-range casting by reducing the resistance of the line. We have Alice and her fellow coven-mates getting together and the most powerful man in the world quaking in his boots – what manner of things are you setting up here? And just how will poor Mallory Hope get involved? The book concludes with a double finale, bringing together and resolving both plot lines. The ending was satisfying and well done.

Line clip: A small clip on the spool that line can be placed under, stopping it from leaving the reel. Originally designed to stop lines from falling off in transit, they are now commonly used to repeatedly cast a set distance.

Reel one of this latest Hope had Mallory investigating a haunted/cursed film set, very much in the sort of ballpark of previous Hope storylines. But here in the second Reel, it’s gone a hell of a lot more expansive, a lot more worldly, and is busy switching between Mallory and his no longer missing wife Alice.

There were also many political references in Nate's storyline that I felt were unnecessary. I found myself skimming, which I have never done with any of the other books in the series. SHADOWS REEL takes a clunky headfirst dive into the politics of the moment, and while it would be a mistake to project the views of its characters onto their creator, a few things jump out: The book has an A-plot and a B-plot. The A-plot has Joe and Marybeth mixed up in a murder plot that involves a mysterious German photo album. The B-plot centers on Nate Romanowski hunting for the man, Axel, that threatened his family and stole his falcons. Nate's story has to be a continuation of the previous novel, Dark Sky. Right? She learns that during World War II several Wyoming soldiers were in the group that fought to Hitler's Eagles Nest retreat in the Alps--and one of them took Hitler's personal photo album. Did another take this one and keep it all these years? When she finds the name of a deceased local man who was likely in the unit, Joe visits the man's son--only to find him brutally tortured and murdered. Someone is after the photo album--but why? And when a close neighbor is murdered, Joe and Marybeth face a new question: How will they figure out the book's mystery before someone hurts them...or their girls? As usual, Joe and Marybeth’s daughters, now grown, are featured in the story making one wonder where the series will take them. I’m hoping possibly a spin off as the two oldest are very interested in law enforcement. Spoilsport! Okay, how about this then? From just those first couple of episodes, I’m getting the feeling that you’re building to a rather dreadful crescendo – are we looking at a possible end to the series and is it going to be going out in a magical/nuclear inferno? GA: As wonderful as Chandler and Hammett are they’re predominantly novelists so, yeah… Not part of the mix at all. This is about cinema. Yes, apologies for that – that was lazy shorthand on my part! Stylised but naturalistic is far better!
