Main article: Operation Mongoose General Edward Lansdale, commander of the anti-Cuban Operation Mongoose project Early 19th century logging of the North Maine woods employed native Maliseet, English settlers from the Atlantic coast, French Canadians from the Saint Lawrence River valley, and some unskilled laborers recruited from large eastern cities. Unique mythology evolved in the remote logging camps from hazing new employees or attempts by competing groups to dominate the resource extraction labor market. Two birds held special significance. The relatively tame gray jays would follow loggers through the woods in the hope of stealing unwatched food, but were not harmed because they were believed to be the spirits of deceased woodsmen. Some French Canadians would quit work if a white owl was seen flying from a tree they were felling, for they believed it was a ghost who would haunt them unless they left that part of the woods. Throughout North Woods, Mason experiments with a polyphony of styles and tropes. At times, as with the chapter devoted to dedicated apple-cultivator Charles Osgood, the novel evokes pre- and post-lapsarian Paradise Lost. “Is it an accident,” Osgood wonders, “that our artists chose none other than Malus domestica to depict the forbidden fruit which tempted Eve? Was not Eve herself in fact a cutting, taken from Adam’s rib?” Gorgeous . . . a tale of ephemerality and succession, of the way time accrues in layers, like sedimentary soil.” —NPR

It’sa dazzling high-wire act—and it’s thrilling to read . . . There are a lot of great books coming out this fall but, if I were you, I’d start with this one.” — The Star Tribune David Ruppe, "U.S. Military Wanted to Provoke War With Cuba; Book: U.S. Military Drafted Plans to Terrorize U.S. Cities to Provoke War With Cuba," ABC News, 1 May 2001. Hunters, fishermen, canoeists, rafters, bird-watchers, and hikers have been accustomed to having the run of much of this forest, with the tacit permission of most timber companies, many of which were founded here and have long historic ties to Maine’s woodland communities. But a lot has changed in recent years. One of the biggest factors has been the increasing value of lakefront property, which has made this land far more valuable as second-home property than as standing timber. Several parcels of formerly open land have been sold off and closed to visitors. On 3 August 2001, the National Assembly of People's Power of Cuba (the main legislative body of the Republic of Cuba) issued a statement referring to Operation Northwoods and Operation Mongoose wherein it condemned such U.S. government plans. Much of Maine’s outdoor recreation takes place on private lands—and that’s especially true in the North Woods, 9 million acres once owned by only a handful of timber companies. Increasingly, this uninhabited land is at the heart of a simmering debate over land-use policies. Chris Floyd, "Head Cases," Moscow Times, 21 December 2001, pg.
