We recently began a new routine in our family. After we finish dinner and clear the table, we take turns choosing a board game to play together. We have had such a great time rotating through my growing collection of traditional games, learning, playing, and enjoying our time together (and teaching some great sportsmanship lessons along the way, too!). I have always loved playing card games and board games, and my kids are finally getting to the age where we can have some seriously fun (and competitive) family game nights. You may already be familiar with (and have played) some of the other Underdog Games board games, such as Trekking the World or Trekking the National Parks. This game has many of the qualities families love about Underdog Games products, but different elements, mechanics, and game pieces that will be new to explore. Sometimes you want a game that cuts through the layers upon layers of complexity of modern Euro games and instead emphasises doing one thing, and doing it well. Trekking Through History‘s thing is set collection, and it’s something it does very well. Designer Charlie Bink has put together a simple. streamlined, and very pretty game, and it’s one I’ve really enjoyed playing with my family. Not all those who wander are lost By combining traditional resources with engaging games, you can create a dynamic and immersive learning experience that will leave a lasting impact on your homeschool journey. Best Board Games for History

Trekking Through History isn’t nearly as sprawling as its predecessor, but it brings an entirely new experience full of interesting decisions that originates from a similar place. It’s clearly focused on engaging the family gaming experience with a rich, similar tone. The similar vibes extend to the impressive production standards—now clearly a staple with this line of games. It was neat to see their brains turning as they figured out different ways to strategize, and overall, we really loved playing Trekking Through History. Even though we are seasoned gamers, and we play a lot, every time a new game gets added to our collection it fills me with dread! Actually not so much now Freddie is older, as he works it out for me! When the folks at Underdog Games asked me to take a look at Trekking Through History, I was keen, but seeing the low Weight rating on BGG (1.8 at the time of writing) made me wonder if I’d get much out of it. I am very happily surprised. I taught myself how to play with a two-handed game, which is the way I usually learn, and after just ten minutes I knew that I really liked the game, and I knew that I wanted to get other people to play. Choosing where – or more accurately, when– you go to is as easy as choosing a card from the central market and adding it to your splayed collection of cards. That on its own would be pretty dull, so instead the game offers you these cool plastic experience tokens for taking cards. Some come from the card you choose, and others from the slot you took it from in the market. The tokens fill in spaces on your Itinerary sheets, which get swapped out after each day (round) is complete. Fill in the correct spots on your itinerary sheets to get points and time crystals. We designed it with families in mind, specifically with kids who are 10+. To ensure it would be good for all ages, we did a lot of playtesting and tweaking of mechanics and rules. Few things make me happier than being able to remove or simplify rules. Don’t get me wrong—this game still has a number of rules in it—but we did our best to make it direct as possible. To me, games with simple rules are like the poetry of the game world. Is this game just like the others in the Trekking line? You might also simply ask your child to randomly select a card and use it as a research topic. Just Have Fun As I mentioned above, not only is this a beautiful board game, but there are many strategic choices involved which makes it engaging. It’s not a trivia game, so you don’t have to worry about knowing specific things about history to play – it’s really a game that will take your family on a journey.

I will admit that this was our first go-round with a game quite like this. My kids are 9, 9, and 11, and with this being recommended for ages 10+, they all did fairly well. During the first round, we all were kind of learning how the game worked, and then everyone realized just how many different strategic opportunities there were – and it became even more fun! One of Trekking Through History’s appealing features is its simple rule set and easy accessibility.Incorporating history games into your homeschool is a fantastic way to enhance the best homeschool history curriculum. I enjoyed Underdog and Bink’s earlier games. They were fun, simple, highly produced games that offered a bit of education, a pretty interface, and simple mechanics, but they weren’t the kinds of puzzles I could sit and noodle over alone or with other gamers. They were family games, through and through. That’s not bad. I gave both games a Play and enjoy playing both with my family. But Trekking Through History goes above and beyond for several reasons. Have conversations about the things they learn from the history cards, which may lead to other areas they want to research and learn about. If you have an interest-led homeschooling style, this could work really well! Plus, the game involves time crystals – and who doesn’t love those?
