Oh and the name recalls Norman’s early career as a chauffeur to Earl and Lady St Germans, often driving them to society functions – so he could well have run into Bertie Wooster or Jeeves who helped us convey the joys of Finton’s Gin in an earlier blog. With a chemistry degree under his belt, John also studied at the Institute of Brewing and Distilling, gaining enough knowledge to start creating spirits. This was followed by three years of trial and error (learning doesn’t stop with the passing of an exam) with John overcoming some tough lessons along the way.

South East Cornwall based Trevethan Distillery, predominantly known for its multi award winning Trevethan Cornish Dry Gin, has announced it has received a major investment from the family owners of Cornwall’s Ince Castle Estate. Trevethan Distillery has expanded its range beyond the original recipe to include other variations and flavours. These often feature innovative twists on the classic gin, incorporating seasonal and locally sourced botanicals, thus offering a diverse palate of tastes for gin aficionados. Their portfolio might include limited edition releases showcasing the versatility and creative potential of the original Trevethan spirit. The spirit is a very well balanced one and as such all of the botanicals seem to come to the tongue at once when tasted neat. The cassia plays nicely with the vanilla, giving a real hint of baking spices. Once the initial spice levels off, the citrus becomes a bit louder and though there really is no sense of dominance at any one time, elderflower really comes through on the finish. For the entirety of the taste, juniper forms a base line on which all of the other botanicals seem to skip.Trevethan’s success has continued an upward journey since 2015 with its flagshipTrevethan Cornish Dry Gin winning an award every single year, improving its score year on year at the prestigious International Wine & Spirits Competition ( IWSC), an almost unheard-of achievement in the gin category. In 2021 they achieved the ultimate accolade, theIWSC’s ‘ UK Gin Producer of the Year’, cementing their reputation as one of the leading Gin distilleries in the World. Further endorsed, when Forbes magazine listed Trevethan Cornish Dry Gin as one of the ‘World’s Top 20 Gins’, with the company going on to receive major listings with premium online spirit retailers and buyers as well as a recent national listing with Waitrose & Partners at the end of 2022. Today Trevethan has become an internationally recognised, multi award winning distillery with a growing portfolio of exceptional handcrafted spirits. Favourites include the Chauffeurs Reserve Navy Strength Gin, Grapefruit & Lychee Gin, Honey Oak Gin, 2 Craft R ums and the first Cornish Craft A peritif, Koneva. Watch this space for exciting new plans announced! For those interested in the art of distillation, Trevethan offers experiences that allow visitors to delve into the world of gin-making. These experiences can range from guided tours that tell the story of the distillery and its founders to gin-making workshops where participants can craft their own unique bottle of gin to take home. Add ice to a glass and pour in 100ml of good quality light tonic, followed by 50ml of Trevethan Cornish Gin, and stir. Always add the gin last to cool it more slowly and achieve the best flavour! Creating a replica of Norman’s gin was a huge challenge; though legendary amongst the family (and rolled out for occasions long after Norman’s death) – the gin had never had its recipe noted down, and there was only one living person left who’d tasted it - Rob’s mum. She became a willing guinea pig, giving the duo guidance on the overall taste and eventually steering them in the direction of a dry gin profile, perked up with elderflower and gorse flower sweetness, a spicy undertone and an overall smooth texture.

Very exciting times for team Trevethan today we release the news that we have received major investment. Read our press release below: The substantial investment will be used tostrengthen the brand through marketing which in turn will drive volume growth in the UK and push exports. There are exciting plans afoot for new product development after dipping its toe into the dark spirits market last year after launching Trevethan Cask Aged Golden Rum. The investment will alsocreate additional jobs in Cornwall and out of county by expanding its national sales teams. In 2022 Trevethan’s flagship Trevethan Cornish Dry Gin finally achieved the ultimate accolade, a ‘Gold Outstanding’ medal awarded by the IWSC. Only five London Dry Gins in the world received this award, a remarkable achievement that really sets Trevethan Gin apart. From this base, John spent two years twisting and tweaking various recipes until he had one he was happy with – one for a modern gin that held true to the profile presented in Norman’s spirit. Trevethan Distillery was founded in 2014 and in 2021 was crowned ‘National Gin Producer of the Year.’Another success story for Cornwall as premium handcrafted spirit producer, Trevethan Distillery, has secured a major investment which will see its expansion in the UK and overseas, and further product development.
