Next up Jim got in touch, to say “Just popped in to have a look at these bikes. Unfortunately they had sold the only 20 inch Wild Bike they had, which is the one that I was most interested in. I weighed the 18 at 6.8kg and the 24 at 9.4kg.” I found it was easy to shift my weight fore/aft when needed on steep technical sections of trail. However, on very steep climbs, I needed to lean forward over the bars to help load the front wheel, especially when using the Bosch Performance CX Race motor’s Race Assistance level. Maxxis Minion DHF 2.60" 120 TPI FB 3C Maxx Terra Exo+ TR, Maxxis Minion DHR II 2.60" 120 TPI FB 3C Maxx Terra Exo+ TR I’d tried out a friends new Islabike Cnoc 14, another friends Frog 43 and another friends Carrera Cosmos, and wanted to reassure myself I’d looked at all options for a decent quality, lightweight first pedal bike.

Only gripe, the colours for the 20″ aren’t particularly inspiring, blue and purple which is quite nice and bright pink and silver which is also quite nice, but the 18″ colours are much more interesting.” Climbing on the Orbea Wild M-LTD is comfortable, thanks in part to the updated geometry. Jeremie Reuiller The SKØG can also be used as a balance bike if your child hasn’t quite mastered that stage of learning to ride yet, which will help speed up the “learning to ride” phase. It’s got 16″ wheels and an innovative “growing frame” designed for smaller riders, so you can skip the hassle and the expense of buying two bikes. Orbea also moved to a new “Sealed Internal Cables” (SIC) system to produce a cleaner integrated look but were aware of the hesitation of riders and mechanics alike to deal with such a system, and so worked to make it as mechanic friendly as possible. They identified the area of maintenance that was most difficult to handle with this style of system – replacing the headset bearings. To make this less of an issue, they spec’d the highest quality full-stainless steel bearing an OE company could supply with the goal of giving the longest life possible. Orbea feels confident that most riders will no longer own their bike by the time this high-quality bearing needs to be replaced.

The higher tier builds in both Hydro and Carbon frame materials are equipped with Orbea’s new sister wheel brand, OQUO, which allows Orbea to tightly control the stiffness-flex balance of their premium machines. Orbea’s comprehensive customization program MyO allows customers to personalize their Wild with different spec choices, including selecting the battery size and choosing from a wide range of free custom colors. Suspension-wise, Orbea has tweaked the leverage curve to give the 2023 Wild a more playful ride character. It has reduced the overall progression of the bike, increasing the mid-stroke support.Access rights extend to wild camping—defined as "lightweight, done in small numbers, and only for two or three nights in any one place". You can camp in this way wherever access rights apply, but care should be taken to 'leave no trace'.

Until recently Decathlon’s kids bikes were all heavy steel framed affairs, but they’re been upgrading their range and the B’Twin 16 900is a great example of what they’ve managed to deliver. Age wise it’s designed for about 4.5 years up (102cm to 121cm height range) which could be until 7 years old (depending on growth rate.) We’ve reviewed a wide range of Frog Bikes over the years and they’ve always been well designed and specified.Crankset doesn’t appear to have a particularly narrow q-factor, ~163mm (rough measure), compared to 135mm quoted for Isla. This is a shame as I think the frame design would allow for a narrower, more child friendly set. Price wise, Wild Bikes (on the prices currently offered) are around the same as the Pinnacle Range at Evans Cycles and the Carrera range at Halfords (the latter varies in price a lot). In my opinion, they’re much better looking than both these ranges, and (if weights correct) the Wild Bikes are several kilos lighter.

It’s worth noting that the guarantee on the Wild Bikes is only 1 year, and on the Islabikes and Frog Bikes is 5 years for frame and forks – so obviously the Wild Bikes aren’t expected to handle the same sort of terrain as their more expensive counterparts. However, if you’re not intending to hurtle your bikes down off road trails, then these could be very good value for money. The Frog 44 is a new version of the really popular Frog 48, their previous sixteen inch wheel bike. They’ve introduced a lower standover for the frame, meaning children can start riding it with legs 4 cm shorter than before (i.e 44cm rather than 48cm inside leg). I just took delivery of a wild bikes 20″ and am amazed by the value. Our little ones first bike was an Isla (Cnoc) and my threshold for being impressed is suitably high, but impressed I am. I few pros and cons for those that care: Frog Bikes come with everything you expect from a quality kids bike – child specific components, a good riding position and a light weight frame which all combine to make learning to ride such great fun. The BTwin 16 weighs in at 7.3kg, which is significantly lighter than most cheap 16 inch kids bikes at this price, or lower. It goes with the name, but wild camping needs to be in the wild. Houses and towns mean people, and more concerningly… dogs. Camp away from houses, farms and vineyards, and you are less likely to be disturbed or questioned.
